This sweet family is always a blast to work with! I first met and photographed them when the oldest of this family was a newborn baby just brought home from the hospital. So it’s so special to continue capturing their love and connection as the family has grown. For this year’s annual session, we had colorful fun with Christmas-themed Will Rogers Gardens family portraits in Oklahoma City.

Don’t forget the heart of the family

I think so often during family portraits, the emphasis is almost strictly on the full group. Or the kids. But I’m a huge believer in always taking the time to photograph the heart of the family. The two people who began this love story! I always make sure to capture a few portraits of the parents by themselves. However formally or casual that they prefer.

This is usually toward the end of the session, after everyone has a chance to get comfortable with the camera. When we’ve taken so many wonderful photos, and everyone is having a blast, there’s almost that sense of relief in knowing that the Will Rogers Gardens family portraits are a success. So the parents can relax into a few photos of themselves, while the kids cheer them on behind my camera. After all, the parents have spent a lot of time cheering on smiles from their children during the session. It is time they’re cheered on themselves!
